There is a good reason for that. It is a wonderful story. It has all the ingredients one expects from a historical adventure. A powerful emperor, a deteriorating political situation, house arrest and a daring escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History loves such moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more I think about it, however, the more I find myself drawn to what happened after the excitement ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because an escape, however remarkable, only solves the immediate problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It gets you out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real challenge begins when you get home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the peculiar things about history is that we tend to remember moments and forget processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We remember the coronation of a king but rarely think about the decades that made it possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We remember the battle but forget the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We remember the summit and overlook the climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agra is one such moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The episode is so dramatic that it tends to overshadow everything that followed. Yet when Shivaji Maharaj returned from Agra, Swarajya was still unfinished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may sound strange given what we know today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, history remembers Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the founder of a kingdom. We know how the story ends. We know that the dream survives. We know that the coronation at Raigad lies ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people living through those events enjoyed no such certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For them, Swarajya remained a work in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I wrote about the earlier chapters of Shivaji Maharaj&#8217;s life, what fascinated me most was the dream itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a teenager deciding that the political realities around him were not immutable facts but merely circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine believing strongly enough in an idea called Swarajya to dedicate your life to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second chapter of the story, at least to me, was about proving that the dream could work. Capturing forts was one thing. Building institutions around them was another entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This chapter feels different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is no longer whether Swarajya can be imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor is it whether Swarajya can function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question now is whether Swarajya can endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that, I suspect, may be the hardest challenge of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The older I get, the more convinced I become that success creates its own difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an idea exists only in the imagination of its creator, it can afford to be imperfect. It does not have to feed soldiers, administer villages or maintain alliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A kingdom enjoys no such luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every fort requires attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every commander requires direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every success creates fresh responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The larger Swarajya became, the greater the burden of sustaining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what fascinates me about the years after Agra. They were not years spent celebrating an extraordinary escape. They were years spent working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strengthening forts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recovering territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improving administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consolidating gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preparing for challenges that had not yet emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work lacks the drama of Agra, yet without it the story would have ended very differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time, I thought of the coronation at Raigad as the culmination of Shivaji Maharaj&#8217;s journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reward of sorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A grand moment at the end of a remarkable life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The older I get, the less convinced I am by that interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coronation did not create Swarajya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The forts already existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The administration already existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people who believed in the idea already existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coronation simply acknowledged something that years of effort had made undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swarajya was no longer a dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was no longer an experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction may seem subtle, but I think it matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coronation was not the beginning of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nor was it really the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was recognition that the story had succeeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever I think about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, I find myself returning to the same conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History remembers the dramatic moments because they are easy to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dream of Swarajya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting with Afzal Khan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The escape from Agra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coronation at Raigad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What fascinates me are the quieter years that connect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The years spent building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strengthening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persisting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The years spent doing the sort of work that rarely captures the imagination but ultimately changes the course of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The escape from Agra was remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coronation was historic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet perhaps the most extraordinary thing was everything that happened in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because escaping was only the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real achievement was returning to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-continue-the-investigation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Continue The Investigation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the things Detective Col.
