“Can someone help me clean up?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n One moment, you have three perfectly healthy children in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next, everyone has suddenly remembered urgent appointments elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But chores, tedious as they may occasionally be, teach children quite a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Responsibility. Independence. Cooperation. The astonishing discovery that dirty socks do not actually walk themselves to the laundry basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can also teach something we may not have intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gender roles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Who cooks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who cleans?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who fixes things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who carries heavy bags?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who looks after younger children?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Long before children understand phrases such as gender parity<\/em> or equal participation<\/em>, they are watching how responsibilities are divided around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And quietly taking notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Children don’t necessarily need identical chore lists. But household responsibilities should be assigned according to age, ability and circumstance rather than gender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Boys can cook, clean and care for younger children. Girls can fix things, carry groceries and help outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The objective isn’t to make everybody do exactly the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is to prevent children from learning that certain responsibilities automatically belong to men or women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That’s the idea sitting quietly underneath Sweep and Mop<\/a><\/strong>, the second story in Biplobworld’s Girls = Boys, Each Unique<\/a><\/strong> series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most parents probably don’t announce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “In this family, cleaning is women’s work.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Thankfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But we don’t really need to say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If Mum always cooks while Dad always sits at the table, children notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If Dad is automatically summoned whenever something breaks, they notice that too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If daughters are asked to help serve guests while sons continue playing, that is another little piece of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of these individual moments necessarily means very much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Repeated often enough, however, they can start creating a picture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is what women do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is what men do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And because home is a child’s first little model of how the world works, that picture can be surprisingly powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Sweep and Mop<\/a><\/strong>, Biplob and Ritika are helping Avantika, Adi, Asif and Riya train for their pickleball trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ritika’s first instruction isn’t particularly glamorous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sweep the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then mop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Adi and Riya are assigned sweeping duties. Girl, boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody gets the “girl job” because there isn’t one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Interestingly, the children are puzzled not by who<\/em> has been asked to clean but by why on earth cleaning the court is going to make them better pickleball players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps that’s exactly where we want children to get to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Why is the boy mopping?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Why are ANY of us mopping?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n A much more universal childhood complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gender equality discussions often concentrate on opening traditionally male activities to girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that’s important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Girls should absolutely have access to sport, STEM,<\/a> leadership and every other opportunity based on their interests and abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But parity has another side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Boys need freedom from traditional gender roles too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A boy should be able to cook dinner without it being treated as remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He should know how to clean his room, wash clothes and care for another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because he is being taught to do “women’s work”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because he’s being taught to function as a human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Likewise, a girl learning how to use tools isn’t doing a “man’s job”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She’s learning a useful skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps she’ll love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps she’ll decide she’d happily live her entire life without seeing another screwdriver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both are acceptable outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There’s a useful principle running through the Girls = Boys, Each Unique<\/a><\/strong> stories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does the task actually require?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sweeping requires neither masculinity nor femininity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It requires a broom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cooking requires some basic skills, attention and ideally an ability to distinguish salt from sugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Caring for a younger sibling requires patience and responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Changing a tyre requires knowing how to change a tyre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once we start describing tasks by the skills they require, many gender labels begin looking rather silly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That doesn’t mean every family member must perform every job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Families divide responsibilities according to schedules, preferences and abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps Dad genuinely is the better cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps Mum genuinely knows more about fixing things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The important question is whether children see these as individual abilities or gender rules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There’s another subtle element in Sweep and Mop<\/em> worth noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ritika doesn’t arrive at the pickleball court to watch the children train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She arrives as their trainer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Biplob has asked her to improve their endurance and speed, and she promptly takes charge. The children sweep, mop, run drills and practise according to her instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Again, nobody delivers a speech about female leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ritika simply knows what she’s doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we want children to grow up seeing men and women as equally capable, they need ordinary exposure to women as experts, coaches, decision-makers and problem-solvers\u2014and men as carers, cooks, teachers and nurturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not occasionally as a special “look, a woman can do this too!” moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Parents can sometimes become so enthusiastic about teaching values that even washing dishes acquires an educational objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t need to announce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Today, children, we are dismantling traditional gender roles by cleaning the bathroom.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n You’ll lose them at bathroom<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Simply distribute responsibilities fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rotate jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Teach every child basic life skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let sons and daughters help cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let both learn simple repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ask both to clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ask both to carry things appropriate to their age and strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ask both to care for pets or younger family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Equality becomes much more powerful when it is normal rather than ceremonial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is another reason to avoid gender-specific jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every task a child repeatedly doesn’t do is a skill the child may never develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If boys are rarely expected to clean, cook or organise, they aren’t merely learning that those are women’s responsibilities. They’re missing opportunities to become competent at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If girls are automatically excused from physical jobs, simple repairs or practical problem-solving, the same thing happens in reverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eventually, “I don’t know how”<\/em> can begin masquerading as “I’m not good at that.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Children need opportunities to become capable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And capability builds confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The children in Sweep and Mop<\/em> eventually discover that Ritika’s strange training methods have a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sweeping and mopping make the court extraordinarily familiar to them. Their other exercises improve stamina, movement, coordination and court coverage. What initially feels pointless becomes part of their preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Household chores work a little like that too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The objective isn’t merely a clean floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A child putting away laundry is learning responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A child preparing a simple meal is learning independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A child helping another family member is learning cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when these opportunities are shared without gender labels, children absorb one more quiet lesson:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everybody contributes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Gender parity can sound like an enormous subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At home, it can begin with remarkably ordinary things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A broom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A saucepan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A toolbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A laundry basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Give children responsibilities according to what they’re ready to learn rather than what boys or girls have traditionally been expected to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Will this immediately create a generation completely free of gender stereotypes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Will your children suddenly volunteer to mop the kitchen every evening because they’re passionate advocates of equality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Definitely not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But over time, something more useful can happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They stop thinking of everyday responsibilities as men’s work or women’s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They simply become things that need doing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps that’s one of the most practical gender-parity lessons we can give them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Sweep and Mop<\/a><\/strong>, the second story from Biplobworld’s Girls = Boys, Each Unique<\/a><\/strong> series, boys and girls train, clean, learn and improve together.
